Angel One, a prominent financial services company, has reportedly suffered a significant data breach affecting nearly 8 million customers.
The Economic Times reported that a hacker leaked personal information on a website, including the names and addresses of the affected users.
The hacker is said to have accessed sensitive data, including the profit and loss statements of the impacted customers. According to a cybersecurity consultant, the compromised data is from around 2023.
Angel One asserted that customer data is secure and stated, “There has been no new data leak incident. The current issue pertains to an incident that occurred in April 2023, which was promptly reported to the relevant authorities.
We assure you that this incident does not impact client securities, funds, or credentials, and all client accounts remain secure.”
The Mumbai-based stock broking firm also suffered a data breach in April last year. The company did not disclose the number of customers affected at that time.
Angel One revealed that malicious actors had gained access to affected users’ names, mobile numbers, and email addresses but assured that information related to funds and securities remained safe despite the breach.
According to cybersecurity firm Check Point, India suffered 2,138 weekly attacks per organization in 2023.
Additionally, Cisco’s 2024 Cybersecurity Readiness Index noted that only 4% of Indian organizations are ‘mature’ in their readiness to deal with cybersecurity-related risks, with about 37% of organizations in India at the ‘progressive’ stage.
As per Cisco’s report, only 3% of organizations are considered ‘mature’ in their cybersecurity readiness.
