Sameer Nigam, CEO and co-founder of PhonePe apologized for his social media comments criticizing Karnataka’s draft job reservation bill.
The Bill proposes that private companies reserve 50% of management positions and 70% of non-management positions for residents. Nigam clarified that he did not intend to offend the state or its people.
Nigam expressed his gratitude for the supportive business environment in Karnataka, where PhonePe was founded, saying, “PhonePe was born in Bengaluru, and we are incredibly proud of our roots in this city.”
He further emphasized, “If my comments hurt anyone’s sentiments in such a way, I am truly sorry.” Nigam also highlighted his respect for Kannada and other Indian languages, acknowledging India’s linguistic diversity and cultural heritage as national assets.
Nigam affirmed his commitment to creating jobs in Bengaluru and Karnataka. He advocated for dialogue and discussion to develop sustainable employment opportunities, saying, “I believe with more dialogue and discussion, we can find ways to create more sustainable employment avenues. Let’s all work together to do this meaningfully while creating long-term impact.”
Following the backlash to the Bill, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the draft would be temporarily put on hold.
He stated that the next cabinet meeting would hold a comprehensive discussion to make a final decision. Nigam expressed hope for a collaborative effort to create long-term employment solutions.
