This could be the most wicked-looking automobile to come out of a Japanese carmaker.
Imagine KIT from Knight Rider fused with Mad Max’s Interceptor, downsized for modern times. Enter the Subaru WRX Project Midnight—a sleek, black beast boasting a Nissan GT-R-beating 670 horsepower.
The Project Midnight’s standout feature is its astonishing power output.
Utilizing a 2.0-liter flat-four turbo engine derived from Subaru’s rallycross team, the car pumps out an incredible 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque. This makes it the fastest WRX to come from Subaru Motorsports USA.
What makes this power even more impressive is the vehicle’s weight—around 1,000 pounds lighter than a standard WRX, thanks to its full carbon fiber body, bringing the total weight to just 2,469 pounds.

The turbocharged and intercooled engine spins all the way to 9,500 rpm, delivering power to all four wheels, a signature trait of the WRX.
The Project Midnight features extensive aero modifications on its custom carbon fiber body. It boasts a widebody look with dramatically flared wheel arches, winglets, a large front spoiler, and a heavily revised rear wing inspired by Subaru USA’s rally car.
The car is equipped with a custom-built suspension package optimized for tarmac surfaces and rides on 18-inch wheels with slick tires for maximum grip.
This weekend, motorsport fans can witness the Project Midnight in action as it tackles “The Hill” at the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed. Ex-F1 and rallycross driver Scott Speed will be behind the wheel, showcasing the car’s incredible capabilities.
Subaru and gymkhana enthusiasts will recognize elements from the 2020 Subaru Gymkhana film featuring Travis Pastrana.
The team at Vermont SportsCar drew inspiration from that WRX to create Project Midnight. With Scott Speed at the helm, expect a thrilling performance as the car powers up the famous Goodwood Hill, leaving a lasting impression on motorsport fans in the U.K.
The Subaru WRX Project Midnight stands as a testament to Subaru’s engineering prowess, blending high performance, innovative design, and motorsport heritage into a modern-day marvel.
