Uber is set to reintroduce its Uber Black service in India, aiming to elevate the premium ride-hailing experience. The service will be launched in the coming weeks, initially in select localities in Mumbai, according to a report from the Economic Times, which cited sources familiar with the matter.
Uber first launched in India in 2013 with Uber Black, offering luxury cars like Mercedes, BMW, and Audi. However, the service was soon replaced with luxury alternatives such as Toyota Innova, Honda City, and Toyota Corolla. Despite this, Uber Black was eventually halted in 2014.
The new iteration of Uber Black in India is designed to be a “far more sustainable model.” Customers can expect a white-glove cab service featuring larger vehicles than the commercial sedans currently available. According to the report, SUVs and MUVs from brands like Toyota and MG will be used. This premium service will be priced 30-40% higher than Uber’s existing top product, Uber Premier. Uber anticipates significant demand, particularly from corporate travelers, with the service being launched through Uber’s fleet partners.
Uber’s strategy is to cater to a wide range of customers, from entry-level to high-end users. According to a source quoted by the Economic Times, “For Uber in India, its premium ride-hailing products are growing much faster than Uber Go, the entry-level on-demand taxi offering. The company is looking to double down on its higher-end services.”
Confirming the development, an Uber spokesperson stated, “There is a critical mass of travelers willing to pay a premium for on-demand services that offer a high-end experience. As Uber caters to a full spectrum of riders with different mobility needs, we are responding to this growing demand.”
